What do Stadium, Pro and Player Issue mean?

What is a Stadium, Pro or Player Issue football shirt?

If you've ever considered buying a football shirt, or have bought one, you've probably heard terms like Stadium, Pro, or Authentic, and perhaps even Player Issue. Understanding these terms will help you make the right choice, but what exactly do they mean? We'll discuss that below.

Stadium Shirts

Stadium shirts are designed specifically for fans. These are therefore the shirts you most often see in stores and online stores. Stadium shirts are also called replica shirts. Definitely not to be confused with imitation shirts. Stadium shirts look incredibly similar to the shirts the players wear on the pitch. These shirts are therefore perfect for supporting your favorite club. Stadium shirts are also less expensive than authentic and player-issue shirts.

Some of the features are:

  • Price : Cheaper than authentic and player issue shirts.
  • Material : Made of sturdy, comfortable material. They have less advanced cooling and drainage technology.
  • Fit : Fits more relaxed and less tight than authentic and player issue shirts.
  • Details : The logos and badges are usually embroidered or printed.

Pro Shirts

These shirts are a step closer to the shirts the players wear on the pitch. Pro shirts are sometimes called "match issue" because they are almost identical to the shirts worn by the players. We use the term "Pro" in our titles and descriptions, but the word "Authentic" is also used to describe this type of shirt. Those are synonyms.

Some of the features are:

  • Price : More expensive than Stadium shirts.
  • Material : Lightweight. Made with fabrics featuring advanced technology to provide optimal ventilation and sweat wicking. Nike calls it Dri-FIT ADV or Vaporknit , and Adidas calls it HEAT.RDY. Puma calls it Ultraweave.
  • Fit : Slim fit. Pro shirts sit close to the skin. Perfect for working out.
  • Details : The logos and badges are generally heat-pressed, so it is lighter in weight and more comfortable to wear.

Player Issue Shirts

Player Issue shirts are the holy grail of football shirts. These shirts are specifically designed for the players themselves to wear on the pitch. Player Issue shirts are not sold in stores and therefore not available to the general public.

Some of the features are:

  • Price : These shirts are the most expensive because of their rarity.
  • Material : Made with the same technologies and fabrics as Pro shirts, but even more advanced with a focus on the players' needs.
  • Fit : Tight and aerodynamic.
  • Details : Reinforced seams and possibly additional grip zones for optimal functionality during a match.
  • Exclusivity : These shirts are not made for sale in stores.

How do you choose the right shirt?

The choice between a stadium, authentic, or player issue shirt depends on your budget, how you want to wear the shirt, and of course, your personal preference.

Want the cheapest possible shirt to support your favorite team? Then choose a stadium version.

Looking for a shirt to play football or other sports with? Then go for the pro version.

Want to add a unique shirt to your collection? Then a player issue is a unique addition.

At Oldschool Football Shirts, we indicate in our title whether a shirt is an authentic or player issue. We do this by literally adding "Pro" or "Player Issue" to the title. It's also included in the product description.

Understanding the differences between all the options will help you make a well-informed decision. Still having trouble? Feel free to ask us questions via email or chat.
