The World Cup is just around the corner, and the new Dutch National Team shirts have been released. Designed by Nike, these shirts are incredibly popular, as evidenced on platforms like Vinted and Marktplaats, where hundreds of ads offer the latest Dutch National Team shirt. Unfortunately, the vast majority of these are not original.
Some counterfeit versions look good at first glance, but if you know what to look for, you can tell within 10 seconds if it's an original or a fake shirt.
1. Check where the Nike label is attached
On original Nike shirts, the label is usually attached to the sleeve. On most fake shirts, the label is attached to the collar. This is incorrect, and it's a quick way to tell if it's an original Dutch National Team World Cup shirt.
2. Check the sticker
On the labels of modern, new Nike shirts, there are generally stickers. The sticker provides information such as the size and whether the shirt is for men or women. On the original World Cup shirt, this information is in both English and French.
For example, for size S, it will be displayed as S, and below it will be the French designation for size S, which is P. Counterfeit shirts almost never have this. Below is a list of the combinations that should appear on the label:
- S = P
- M = nothing, Medium is the same in French
- L = G
- XL = TG
- XXL = TTG
Furthermore, check if 'Homme' (French for 'Men') is listed under 'Mens'.
3. Pay attention to the color of the sticker
Each sticker has a specific color corresponding to the size:
- S = yellow
- M = light blue
- L = red
- XL = green
- XXL = white
Fake shirts often don't have the correct shade of color. As shown below, the blue color is much darker than it should be. If the color is wrong, it's usually not an original shirt.
4. Quality of the sticker
Fake shirts often don't have a sticker attached; instead, the product information is directly printed on the label. This is incorrect. It should be a sticker attached to the label, not printed.
Nowadays, we see that stickers are printed less sharply than before. As a result, it's more common for a sticker to appear blurry or have white streaks. This is normal and not a sign of a counterfeit shirt.
If you see:
- label on the collar
- missing French size designation
- no 'homme' written
- printed sticker instead of an actual sticker
- wrong color
then it is highly likely that the shirt is not original.
