The Story Behind the Football Shirt - Manchester United 2001/02

Performance

The 2001/02 season was Manchester United's 100th season in professional football. Unfortunately for them, it was a season to forget. Manchester United finished third, their worst finish since the Premier League was established.

Things didn't go well in the cup competitions either. Early eliminations from the FA Cup and League Cup offered few bright spots. Things improved in the Champions League, reaching the semi-finals, where Manchester United were eliminated on away goals by Bayer Leverkusen.

Bright spot

Jaap Stam left Manchester United this season, but another Dutchman joined the club. The bright spot of the season was Ruud van Nistelrooy. It was his first season at Manchester United, having joined from PSV for €28.5 million. Ruud scored 23 goals in the Premier League and 10 in the Champions League. He scored a total of 36 goals in all competitions. This achievement immediately earned him the PFA Player of the Year award.

The shirt

What makes this Manchester United shirt unique is its anniversary. It marked Manchester United's 100th season in professional football. This is reflected on the shirt above the club crest, where a logo mentions the 100th season. That's not the only unique feature. The shirt is reversible. It can be worn inside-out, making it both the away kit and the third kit. View it here .
