The 2014 Dutch National Team away jersey

The Dutch national team delivered a number of iconic moments and matches at the 2014 World Cup. The 5-1 against Spain, Robin van Persie's flying header, and Tim Krul winning a penalty shootout against Costa Rica. These are images that many football-loving Dutch people immediately recognize.

This tournament also featured a striking away kit for the Dutch national team.

While the home kit was all about bright orange, Nike chose a dark blue base with multiple shades of blue and striking orange details for the away kit. A design that felt different from previous Netherlands away kits, but was full of references.

The design

Nike used a color gradient where royal blue slowly transitions into navy and ultimately towards purple at the bottom of the shirt. This color gradient was incorporated into a geometric grid pattern across the entire fabric.

According to Nike, the design also referred to two typically Dutch elements:

  • the important role of water in the Netherlands
  • and the fast combination football that Oranje was known for for years

Also noteworthy: the shirt commemorated the KNVB's 125th anniversary. That's why the away kit featured a special retro version of the KNVB logo on the chest, in orange, with the years 1889 and 2014 incorporated into the design.
